January 29, 2016

Dear P.S. 58 Community of Learners & Families,

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is looking into a report of about 12 students with the norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu, at P.S. 58 Space Shuttle Columbia School on Staten Island.

The school is following protocol and parents are being notified. Out of an abundance of caution, we will be thoroughly disinfecting the school today and again over the weekend. We will continue to work closely with the Department Of Health and Department of Education to ensure that all students are safe.

As always, I thank you for your concern, patience and support in dealing with this matter.

                                                                                                            Sincerely,

                                                                                                            Michael LaMorte

Important Information

This is an update concerning the high incidence of stomach virus for students at our school:

Custodians have and continue to follow protocol and procedures and have thoroughly disinfected the school as recommended by the DOHMH during Friday evening, Saturday and again Sunday. All horizontal surfaces were cleaned using a bleach/water solution. All toilets, sinks and water fountains were sanitized in a similar manner, but with a more concentrated solution. The entire building, including vertical, horizontal and hand contact surfaces, have been cleaned and sanitized with the appropriate products using the protocols outlined by the Department.

Unfortunately, cleaning the building over the weekend does nothing to stop the spread of the virus, as it cannot survive on surfaces once a droplet containing the virus has dried. Vigilance in adhering to proper hygienic procedures, including handwashing, covering your cough, keeping your hands out of your mouth and nose, etc., should be common practice with all students, staff and parents, especially during times like this when viruses are rampant.

As always, I thank you for your concern, patience and support in dealing with this matter.
